rather than後面的動詞可以是-ing形式，也可以是省略to的不定式形式，即rather than doing或rather than (to) do。

rather than前後的動詞形式要保持一致，前面是doing形式則後面也用doing形式，前面是to do形式則後面也用（to）do形式。但rather than位於句首時，則只能接不帶to的不定式。

1、rather than用作連詞，連線兩個平行結構。既可以表示主觀願望上的決擇，“與其…寧可…”，也可以表示客觀程度上的差異，“與其說是…不如說是…”。

2、rather than用作介詞

和as well as及instead of一樣，rather than後面跟一個和母句中的動詞形式並不匹配的ing分詞分句時，它是介詞，而不是準並列連。

優先分句主要用從屬連詞rather than和sooner than引導，用不帶to的不定式作該分句的謂語動詞。
