whetherornot引導的從句

whether（是否）和if（是否）引導的條件狀語從句，都是是否的意思，大部分可以互換，就是用哪個也可以，但是有四種情況是隻用whether，不用if，第一種就是從句中有or not的情況，只能用whether，第二種情況有介詞的時候，只能用whether，第三種情況當從句開頭時，也只能用whether，不用if，第四種情況從接不定式的時候，也只能whether，不用if。

not 引導的賓語從句 [為可省略部分

I do not know whether  telling the turth [or not].

I forgot whether I had returned the money to him [or not].

I cannot dicide whether to go or not.

whether or not可以構成主語從句的一部分

比如Whether or not he realised the fact was neither here nor there.他是否認識到事實真相無關緊要。Whether or not he realised the fact 是主語從句

whether or not 引導的是名詞性從句和讓步狀語從句。

例：

The question arises as to whether or not he knew of the situation.

問題是，他對局勢是否瞭解。

We're debating whether or not to go skiing this winter.我們盤算著今年冬天是否去滑雪。

It remains to be seen whether or not this idea can be put into practice.這一想法能否付諸實踐還有待於觀察。

Whether or not we're successful， we can be sure that we did our best.不管成功與否，我們確已盡了最大努力。
